<dc:description xml:lang="eng">Abstract: The Zvezdara urban forest is located in Belgrade, Serbia, at an elevation of 128 m and covers an area
of 93.65 ha. It has been managed by the Public Utility Company “Zelenilo Belgrade” from 2014 to
2027. Historical records testify to the rich past of Zvezdara—its birds, streams, forests, viewpoints,
and scientific facilities. Over time, however, this urban forest has been degraded through illegal
logging, unplanned construction, and pollution of water and soil, all of which have damaged its
natural condition and identity. The Zvezdara forest consists of two units: a natural monument (61.69
ha) and a park forest (31.96 ha). By researching available data on the natural monument section of
the Zvezdara forest and comparing it with Norwegian urban forests—especially those in the city of
Copenhagen, which it resembles in character and which are considered among the best-preserved
and protected urban forests today—a framework was established for proposing the revitalization of
Zvezdara forest. The proposal suggests the revitalization of part of the Zvezdara forest—the natural
monument—through long-term planning, biodiversity conservation, encouraging natural
regeneration, and climate adaptation, along with strict legal regulations prohibiting tree felling.
The applied method, from the perspective of a landscape architect, confirms that urban forests are
the foundation of a sustainable city, as they integrate ecology, design, social needs, and long-term
planning into a unified system that makes the city healthier, more functional, and more beautiful.
