<dc:description xml:lang="eng">The aim of this paper is to answer the question of why readers experience empathetic reactions to the negative emotions and states of characters in Ivo Andrić’s short stories “The Journey of Alija Đerzelez” (1920), “Mustafa Madžar” (1923), “The Corpse” (1936), and in the novel The Damned Yard (1954), relying on the insights of affective narratology and selected phenomenological theories. Our intention is to shed light, through affective reading and an analytical-synthetic approach to these works of the Serbian Nobel laureate, on what aspects of the characters’ negative behavior provoke a positive emotional response in readers, as well as which narrative techniques employed by Andrić in the given stories and novel contribute to the development of the reader’s empathetic response and enhance the empathetic potential of characters and narrative situations. By taking as our material prose works written at the beginning of Andrić’s career and those belonging to his late creative phase, we aim to show, through textual examples, that regardless of the author’s poetics changing over time, the empathetic response to what is read has not fundamentally shifted, further confirming the artistic value and distinctiveness of Andrić’s oeuvre.</dc:description>
