application/pdf 2139634 bytes Investigating epixylous fungi in the beech forests of Serbia in 1970, authors found wide spread of fungus H. deustum and high incidence of infection at some localities (Valkalusi and Palčina) on South Kučaj. This fungus is also found in all important beech forests of Serbia: Kopaonik, Goč, Golija, Tara, Bukulja, Rudnik and other mountains. H. deustum attacks mature and overmature beech trees causing heart rot of lower parts of tree, extending sometimes up to 7 m. in height. Infections penetrates through wounds on bark made by careless transportation of wood after cutting. Fructifications (stroma) are formed on the level of necrotic bark and on stumps after infected trees have been cut. The rot is confined to the central part of a trunk, but it can include live tissues of sapwood. As a consequence of fungus activity, comes to gradual death of bark.
