<ns1:description language="en">In natural populations of gipsy moth in Serbia 7 Apanteles species were
discovered - 5 of them solitary (A. solitarius R a t z b., A. porthetriae Mu e s b.,
A. melanoscelus Ratz b., A. Iacteicolor Vier and A. vitripennis Curtis) and 2
gregortious (A. liparidis Bouche and A. ocneriae Iv). It is very important that
Apanteles species appear early in the spring reducing young caterpillars before
they provoke big damages in the forests. The most effective species for biological
control is A. solitarius. It has 2 generations in the nature and in the laboratory 7
generations can be reared yearly. It is also important that A. solitarius produces
both diapausing and nondiapausing cocoons still in the first generation, what
enables stocking of cocoons, which will be used ,in biological control, and ensures
the continuity of cocoon production during the whole year. The capability of
A. solitarius to get through the winter like I stage instar in alive young caterpillars
of transition host and like eonympha in cocoons also enables storing of a
large number of cocoons at low temperatures (2-5°C) during a longer period
and intervention in attacked forests in order to control biologically gipsy moth
in the most favorable moment.</ns1:description>
