<dc:description xml:lang="eng">The source of variability and degree of heritability of physical wood qualities
were studied on a sample of 24 beech trees - 6 trees on each of 4 localities
in Serbia.
All physical characteristics to a great extent (45.32% to 57.46%) varied in
dependance on test trees. The variability depending on locality (12.93% to 18.76%)
was not confirmed in all tests. The reduction of variability originating from test
trees moved for different characteristics from 29.61% to 39.98%, being confirmed
in all cases at the level of 0.001 with 20 and 312 DF.
Calculation of degree of heritability has shown that each studied physical
characteristic of beech wood was to a certain degree genetically controlled. From
the material of this testing, degree of heritability (h2) of the studied wood qualities
moved from 0.31 to 0.47.</dc:description>
