<dc:description xml:lang="eng">With the objective to find out the effective and rational methods of protection
of coniferous seedlings from the concurrent sprouting vegetation of broadleaves
in meliorations, in the period 1986-1988 the possibility of stump treating with
chemicals was investigated, in order to prevent their regenerative capability.
The treating of stumps of 50 coppice trees, which were cut once a month
in the period July-December, was made immediatelly after felling, with the arboricide CIDIKOR (A. S. GLIFOSAT) of 15% concentration in water solution.
From a total of 300 treated stumps, at the end of the first vegetation period
195 stumps (65%) were killed, and after the second vegetation period there
were 210 dead stumps (75%), i .e. none regenerated shoot had appeared on them.
The obtained results have shown that during the investigation period July-
December the greatest effect from stump spraying was obtained in October,
when only 28% stumps had survived, but the shoots which had appeared on them
were less numerous, smaller, of poorer quality and health, when compared with
the controls.
The obtained results are quite satisfactory, since a reduction of 70% of the
competing vegetation gives to the planted coniferous seedlings much more space
for their development.
When compared with foliar treatment, for which 200-600 liters of water
per hectar is necessary, or with mechanical shoot cutting, which must be repeated
each second year, this method is more economical and rational and for that
reason may be recommended for application in silvicultural practice.</dc:description>
