In the period from 1984 to 1988 the phenomenon of dieback of Sequoidendron giganteum L. was studied on the mountain of Avala. The number of dead branches was enlarged on all experimental trees in the period of four years, being the most expressed on southern parts of the crown. The dieback starts from the tops of trees. The fungus Diplodia pinea (D e s m.) K i c k. which is found on tree branches and needles, is estimated to be responsible for dieback phenomenon.
