In previous interpretations of Miroslav Maksimović’s collec- tion of sonnets Bol, the historical basis has been mainly empha- sized-thetragicfamilyexperienceofthepoet’smotherwho,asa fourteen-year-oldgirl,escapeddeathatthehandsoftheUstashas- butalsotheneedtotranslatethathistoricalexperienceintoapoetic one, where coincidences and paradoxes, both historically and poet- ically,becamerecognizableelementsofMaksimović’spoeticpro- cess and poetic experience. Starting from the poet's assertion that »coincidence is God's wayofhidinghispresence«,thispaperfirstofalltalksaboutpoetic paradoxesthataremostexpressiveintwolevels:thefirstconcerns thestylisticprocedureinwhich,forexample,theextremelyexplicit andconcretizedsonnettitles(»Sekira«,»Nož«,»Glava«,»Ruka«, »Noga«,»Otac«,»Majka«)arenotonlysymbolsofvisiblereality butalsoofinvisiblephenomena,thosethatpointtothat»dashed lineof horror«,which is allin thedomain ofthe memoryof the tragedy.Thesecondtypeofparadoxreferstotheparadoxoftime, forwhichthepoethimself-paradoxically-saysthatmanycritics havenoticed,buthavenotanalyzed.Thetimeofeventsandthetime ofmemory,thankstothepoet’stalenttogivetheeventsofthepast thecharacterofuniversality,i.e.timelessness,ceasetobepartofthe historical (chronological) plane, but the aesthetic ranges achieved through linguistic and stylistic poetic elements become a poetic entity whose meaning “floats” “ over historical (life) reality. It seems thatthepoeticsoftimeexistsinparallelwiththepoeticsofpain, which is the most dominant in the poetic-axiological sense.
