Мали поетски еп, сачињен од седам песама, „Косово поље” је Попина апотеоза великом митоисторијском догађају наше прошлости, у којој су хришћанска (есхатолошка) и митолошка (космогонијска) перспектива у симболичном јединству. Историјско искуство Косовског боја у Усправној земљи надограђено је и донекле превазиђено метафизичким и есхатолошким искуством, а поетска космогонија из Споредног неба израсла у митопоетску космогонију Усправне земље – основне, небеске, метафизичке. Summary: Vasko Popa belongs to the generation of post-war poets of culture (comprising: Miodrag Pavlović, Ljubomir Simović and Ivan V. Lalić), which is characterized by the poetic re-actualization of tradition and reliance on the medieval heritage, but also differs from all of them in its distinct and recognizable mythological-folkloric layer of his poems, because in his search for personal and collective spiritual identity he went much further into the past than the line that begins with the medieval Christian tradition. This synthesis of mythological-folkloric heritage and old Serbian art came to the fore in the Upright Land collection, in all its five cycles, but also in the central “Kosovo field”. In this connection, Pope’s attitude towards tradition is particularly important, for whom it is not just a mere past to which poets make a pilgrimage, but a kind of substitution for historical and spiritual continuity, the thread of which the poet is obliged to follow. With this cycle, Popa wrote a small poetic epic of symbolic seven poems, in which the Christian (eschatological) and mythological (cosmogonical) perspectives are intertwined, not to the detriment of the other, but to the benefit of the other. Thus, many poetic symbols appear both as projections of the religious dimension and as distinctly mythical symbols (field, sun, blackbird, sacrifice, sky, stars). The strict composition of the cycles dictates the meaning that this event has in the Serbian historical and spiritual past. Contextualizing, i.e. assigning a central position to the poem “Battle on the Kosovo Field” also speaks of the great poetic apotheosis that the poet sang for this historical event. In Popa’s Upright Land, the historical experience of the Kosovo battle was upgraded and somewhat surpassed by metaphysical and eschatological experience, and the poetic cosmogony from Secondary Heaven grew into the mythopoetic cosmogony of the Upright Land, basic, heavenly, metaphysical.
