<dc:description xml:lang="eng">Summary In October of 1944, Kraljevo became a very important strategic point for German troops, because Kraljevo was on the main route for pulling back German troops from Greece. Because of new circumstances German military southeast headquarter issued an order in which they directed defense of bridgeheads that stretched 35km around Kraljevo. Total number of the occupation troops in and around Kraljevo during October and November of 1944 was in the range from 20,000 to 30,000 soldiers.
On the liberators’ side there was 223rd division, 68th corps, 3rd Ukrainian front of the Red Army (with 5,000 soldiers), and 2nd proletarian division, 14th corps of the National Liberation Army of Yugoslavia (NLAY). Total number of the NLAY soldiers that took part in battles around Kraljevo was about 5,700 soldiers. Altogether it makes up 10,700 liberators.
Crucial battles for freedom of Kraljevo started on November 27th. During the following night (November 28th on 29th), liberators forced Ibar river and entered the city abandoned by Germans.
The Red Army units demonstrated the great courage and selfless sacrifice. Together with the NLAY units they acted in liberation of Kraljevo as if they were liberating their own motherland. During the battles, the Red Army units suffered huge losses. According to exhumation records from May 17 to May 21 of 1962, the total number of the Red Army soldiers who died during the battles for Kraljevo freedom from the middle of October until full liberation makes up 340 soldiers and officers. In the honor of Soviet soldiers people of Kraljevo erected monuments on the places where Soviet soldiers lost their lives. The commander of 1041st shooting regiment of the Red Army Matvej Markovic Puzirevski was honored in 1946 with the Partisan Star of the First Class by the Government of Yugoslavia, and in 1969 he became the honorary citizen of Kraljevo. </dc:description>
